U.S. Presidents from the State of Ohio

William Henry Harrison was the 9th President of the United States and the first to come from Ohio.  His grandson, Benjamin, would later become the 23rd U.S. President (the 7th from Ohio).  William Henry Harrison was born in Virginia in 1773, but settled in North Bend, Ohio, after the War of 1812.  Before he became President, he studied medicine, became a soldier (reaching the rank of Major General), and he entered politics.  He served as Governor of Indiana, in the Ohio Senate. He also represented Ohio as a U.S. Congressman and a U.S. Senator.  He served as United States President for only one month.  He died in office and was buried in North Bend, Ohio.

Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, in 1822.  In 1869, he became the 18th president of the United States.  He was a Captain in the War with Mexico and returned to serve as to serve during the United States Civil War.  He was promoted to major general during the war and in 1866 he was appointed General of the Army (four star).  He served two terms as President of the United States from 1869-1877, and died in 1885.

Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822.  He served as the 18th President of the United States from 1877 to 1881.  Like many U.S. Presidents, President Hayes was a lawyer and a soldier.  He served as a U.S. Congressman and Governor of Ohio.  During the Civil War, Rutherford B. Hayes served with the Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

James Abram Garfield was born in Orange, Ohio in 1831.  He became the 20th President of the United States in 1881.  He only served part of his first term as he died later that year.  He was the second U.S. President to be assassinated.

Benjamin Harrison was born in North Bend, Ohio, in 1833.  Before becoming President, he was a lawyer, a soldier during the Civil War (reaching the rank of Brigadier General and served in the U.S. Senate (representing Indiana).  He served as President of the United States for one term from 1889 to 1893.  President Benjamin Harrison was the grandson of President William Henry Harrison.  He died in 1901 and is buried in Indiana.

William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio in 1843 and grew up in Canton, Ohio.  He was a teacher, a lawyer, U.S. Congressman and Ohio Governor.  He served as the 25th President of the United States from 1897 to 1901.  He was assassinated before the end of his second term.

William Howard Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1857.  He became the 27th President and served from 1909-1913.  His great-grandson Bob Taft, was the 67th Governor of Ohio.  President Taft was an Ohio lawyer.  He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President Harding in 1921. 

Warren G. Harding was born in Corsica (Blooming Grove), Ohio, in 1865.  He was the 29th President of the United States and held the office from 1921 until his death in August 1923.  Before becoming President, Warren Harding was an Ohio State Senator, Lt. Governor and U.S. Senator.
