Madrid

In 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue.  Memorizing facts with rhymes or song helped me memorize dates.  I remember studying about Columbus and the Spanish King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who funded the Italian Christopher Columbus’s trip west.

Cristobal Colón’s historic trip is told in a mural beneath the fountain at Plaza de Colón.   The fountain itself is reminiscent of the ocean that Colón sailed with his three ships: La Niña, La Pinta and La Santa María.   Colón himself stands perched at the top of a tall pillar, looking far beyond Madrid to the New World beyond.
