ASU is the home of four instruments currently exploring Mars. In 1997, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft arrived at Mars with the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES). In 2001, the Odyssey spacecraft went into orbit around the planet with the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS). In January 2004, two instruments called Mini-TES landed on Mars aboard the Spirit and Opportunity rovers. All four instruments are from the ASU team led by Principal Investigator Phil Christensen .
