The nickname "Tar Heel" dates back to the Civil War. The story that is told is that a North Carolina group told another group that retreated that Jefferson Davis was going to put tar on their heels to make them stick better in the next fight. General Robert E. Lee heard about the bravery of the NC group and reportedly said, "God Bless the Tar Heel Boys!"
