Many years ago, my grandfather had a farm in Alicante. One day some fishermen from the village brought up three anforas in their nets, which they sold to my grandfather. He gave two away to friends, but kept this one for himself. This ceramic vessel was used by the ancient Romans to transport wine or oil or even grains across their wide empire. They were placed in the holds of their oar and sail-propelled ships, nestled snugly among the stones they used as ballast. This anfora lay for many centuries on the bottom of the sea, and you can observe the barnacles that are still encrusted to the sides.

Hace muchos años mi abuelo tenía una finca en Alicante. Un día, los pescadores del pueblo sacaron en sus redes tres ánforas, que vendieron a mi abuelo. Regaló dos a sus amigos y guardó ésta. Este recipiente de cerámica se usaba por los antiguos romanos para transportar vino o aceite e incluso granos a través de su ancho imperio. Los almacenaban las bodegas de sus barcos metidas entre las piedras que usaban como lastre. Esta ánfora yació durante muchos siglos en el fondo del mar, y hoy se pueden ver las lapas que aún le quedan incrustadas.
