Designing the Landscape

After studying the characteristics and features of Mars, the older children sketched out rough plans and communicated with the other teams to get a general sense of what they wanted to create.  The students were given the opportunity to find their own roles in the project and enjoyed the process of presenting ideas to each other.  So excited were they about the project, you would find groups of them gathered on the playground discussing their ideas during recess!

They then started planning and drawing their landscape on butcher paper, which had been cut to 4-foot lengths.  They were able to match up their drawings to make sure landforms flowed onto the next board before creating their landscape on the boards with papier mâché.  The students later colored their drawings to make their designs more visually pleasing.
