Barley soup was eaten at all levels of Roman Society. There were variations which included diferent pulses and herbs. This probably reflected personal preferences, social status and what was affordable and available.

This is a place we visited on our holidays this year. Hadrian's wall is near the border between England and Scotland and was built by the Romans to keep the local tribes out of England. This is about 300 miles from our home in the South-East of England.
