Sculpting an Imaginary Planet

Before the 5th through 7th grade students could create a 3D globe of Mars, they needed to practice by creating an imaginary planet.  They used information they had learned from studying Mars to create a planet with volcanos, canyons, craters and possible rivers or dunes.  This part of the project works well with a small group or letting individuals creating their own small planets.  There is no end to what can be done with papier mâche and a little creativity.  This part of the project also lends itself well to essay projects or further research.

Several of the students took it upon themselves to use an online translator to come up with realistic and scientific sounding names for some of the major features on their planet.
